Margaret Hampton

Peggy Hampton was born Margaret Mary Heenan in Chicago on January 18, 1943 and passed away peacefully on May 1, 2026 at her home in Manteno, IL at the age of 83 after an eight-year battle with cancer. She was surrounded by loved ones. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank J and Margaret M (Pigott) Heenan, her beloved brother Terry (Robin) and niece Kate as well as her former husband and friend Jim Hampton. She is survived by her son Brian Hampton and his partner Cindy Campbell, her grandson Kyle Hampton and her siblings Jerry (Pat who is deceased), Jim (Roz), and Barbara Jarr. She will be deeply missed by her treasured nieces and nephews and her many cousins and friends. Peggy grew up in Riverdale and graduated from St. Mary of the Assumption grammar school and Mercy High School in Chicago. In 1984 she achieved a longstanding aspiration to become a registered nurse having earned an Associate Degree in Nursing from Prairie State College. She worked at a number of hospitals in the Chicago area and was a valued member of the Ambulatory Surgery staff at Olympia Fields Osteopathic for many years. Peggy passionately enjoyed outdoor activities including mountain hiking, snow skiing, kayaking and golf. She took great joy in surrounding her home with flowers every summer and plunging into Lake Michigan for a swim. She attracted friends and family to join her and inspired all who knew her with her energy and determination. Any obstacle was a challenge to be mastered and age was to be ignored. It was a surprise to no one that she read articles and viewed videos seeking ways to improve her skiing and golf swing right up to the end. But, above all, she had the soul of a nurse. Nursing was her profession, but caring for others was her very nature. Peggy never hesitated to give help to a loved one, patient or complete stranger in need. She was there to lend a hand or an ear or deliver a Texas chocolate cake. Her memory will continue to bring a smile to all who knew her. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
